Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic, often abbreviated as SWTOR or SW:TOR, is a plot-based and storyline-focused MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role game), developed by the renown company Bioware in Austin, TX. The game was announced at an invitation-only conference in 2008, and released on December 20th, 2011. SWTOR is the the first completely MMO that features dubbing of all dialogues. The game had the English, French and German localisations and dubbing at launch.

 

Plot

Timewise the actions in the game take place 300 year after the events that were featured in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game, which is 3.500 years before the events that were described in the famous Star Wars movies. SWTOR events start in the time a the peace between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic stills exists, but conflicts escalate. The Jedi Order has been found guilty and remains viewed as responsible for the loss in the previous war is the Sith Empire that resulted in the unfavourable for the Republic Treaty of Coruscant. The Jedi even had to retreat to their original motherland Tython to seek guidance and advise from the Force. And the Sith are on rise and expand their Empire and influence, they have even brought back to life the Sith Academy.

What is special about SWTOR

Besides the name that doesn't need any extra advertisement and promotion, the most special thing about SW:TOR is that it is kind of not limited, a player may choose his or her part and play it the way that they see appropriate. Moral conflicts may take place, the storyline line is open ended and not placed within borders like in other MMORPGs. Players has to determine their way basically regardless of the race and character faction, even betrayal may occur and it is possible to belong the Galactic Republic, but represent and act from the Dark Side standpoint.

Gameplay

A player may join in one of two main teams - the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. Each team will be headed by the leader. Each team naturally has a different play style and bahaviour pattern, their tasks and ships differ. There are tasks and assignment that can be performed solo without any support, and of course players may unite their forces and do the assignments together. The behavior of NPCs also varies depending on what storyline players choose which leads to a huge variety of available missions. It is possible to pick a mission for oneself and to join a partner in a developing story line. Each character has its own voice speech and dialogues like in story-driven games, e.g. the Mass Effect series, which is unique for MMORPGs.

Factions in Star Wars: The Old Republic

To return to a more classic approach of a MMORPG review, there are 2 major factions in the game - the Galactic Republic, conventionally the good side, and the Sith Empire, the known Dark side that use the Force for their own selfish interests.

Beings or species featured in the game

The game has a variety of species for players to choose from. Such are Chiss, Human, Cyborg, Mirialan, Rattataki, Miraluka, Sith Pureblood, Twi'lek and Zabrak. Along with playable creatures there will be accompanying beings that can serve as a companion or helper. Human and Zabrak may choose any class to play while all the other beings are respricted in their choice of the class (like in some other MMOs). Conventionally all inhabitants of the Star Wars universe can be divided into humanoids, beings and droids.

Classes in SWTOR

Each class in game is available for one party only. Each class has two subclasses (specializations). In addition, each class has its own story and ship types. For example, the Imperial agent is immediately send "under cover" to seek discrediting evidence on a criminal leader cooperating with the Republic, and the agent's ship is experimental, with a stealth system. There are 8 classes in the game. For the Sith Empire the classes are the Sith Warrior, Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter, and Sith Inquisitor; and the Galactic Republic has the following classes - the Trooper, Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, and Smuggler.

PvP and PvE in SWTOR

Generally, Star Wars: The Old Republic, as it was stated above, is very storyline based game. Whatever you do, solo or as part of a group, PvP or PvE oriented is a story-driven action. PvE in the game may be for solo play - the assignments players take from NPCs (Non Player Characters). But there is also a large scale PvE action called Operations. Operations are designed for group of players, eight or 16 in number. They include story-based missions and are available for each of the factions. Operations may have several stages in which the players' tactical and technical abilities will be challenged. PvP is also based on a specific story. Players don't just fight against other players, but represent a role by doing so. For those who love PvP there are open PvP locations (worlds, planet) - this therefore means that free attacks on other are legally possible. There are also special warzones - a kind of instances in which fighting for control over special objects occurs. Such combats will engage a number of players from each side. Some of them incude area-type group combats. And finally, there are duels for those players that seek glory and fame in one on one combat.
